Applications sought for scholarships

The Corrine Wallace Memorial Scholarship Fund offers financial assistance to qualified candidates either currently enrolled in a Christian college or those planning to attend one next fall. It is offered through local churches and spearheaded by Gateway Community Church in Washougal.

The fund offers $10,000 in scholarships, ranging from $500 and $3,000 per person.

Applicants must reside in the Camas or Washougal area, be a Camas or Washougal high school graduate or home schooled, be involved in a local evangelical church, plan to attend a local Christian college as a full-time student. GPA requirements are 2.5 or greater while in high school and 3.0 or greater if already in college.

Colleges approved for attendance include Multnomah University in Portland, Corban College in Salem, George Fox University in Newberg, and Seattle Pacific University in Seattle. In addition, scholarships have also been awarded to students attending colleges out of the area. If an applicant is interested in another college not listed, the scholarship committee will investigate the institution to see if it meets requirements.

The scholarship fund was established by a local couple who wish to remain anonymous.

Applications are available at Gateway Community Church, 1235 “E” St., and can also be sent by email. Completed applications are due by May 1. Recipients will be announced in early June.

Teen tech week set

Teens are invited to the Washougal Community Library to get their “bling” on during Teen Tech Week.

On Friday, March 14, from 4 to 5 p.m., teens will have the opportunity to create fashion accessories with working LED lights.

The library is located at 1661 “C” St.

STEM app seeks submissions

Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler is inviting high school students across Southwest Washington to participate in the first U.S. House STEM App Challenge. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

This year’s event represents the inaugural competition for high school students across the country to showcase their ability to create software applications, or “apps,” for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice.

Last year, the Congress passed The Academic Competition Resolution, putting the STEM App Challenge in motion.

The winning application from Southwest Washington will be featured on the House of Representatives’ website, House.gov, and the winning participants will be presented with an award in a ceremony with Herrera Beutler.

“I’m excited to kick off the first STEM App Challenge, and can’t wait to see Southwest Washington students put their skills to use,” she said. “This contest should offer these students a fun opportunity to get creative and earn recognition for their hard work. STEM skills are becoming increasingly essential for the jobs of tomorrow, and I’ll do whatever I can to encourage young people to master them.”

Locals make Baylor University dean’s list

Several Baylor University students were named to the dean’s academic honor list for the 2013 fall semester, including Nadine Elaina Stone and Natalie Michelle Stone of Camas.

To be named to the list, a student must be an undergraduate with a minimum GPA of 3.7 while enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours.

Baylor is a private Christian university located in Waco, Texas.

Library district launches bookmark contest

The Fort Vancouver Regional Library District has launched its 2014 Summer Reading Bookmark Contest.

The popular annual competition is open to children in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Entry forms for the contest are available in English, Spanish and Russian at any FVRLD library or bookmobile, or in the children’s or teen sections of the district’s website, www.fvrl.org.

The entry deadline is Monday, March 31.

Contest categories are: Kindergarten and first grade; second and third grade; fourth and fifth grade; sixth, seventh and eighth grade; and ninth through 12th grade.

Finalists for each grade grouping will be chosen at individual libraries. One district-wide, grand-prize winner will be selected from among local finalists for each grade grouping.

Grand-prize winning bookmark designs will be printed and distributed in conjunction with the district’s summer reading program, which runs June 1 through Aug. 31. Grand-prize winners will also receive framed copies of their bookmarks and will be honored at local events.

The 2013 contest attracted 4,650 entries, according to Amy Scott, program services coordinator for the district.
