“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

This quote from writer William Arthur Ward, illustrates the special kind of influence a truly great educator can have on a person’s life.

The best kinds of teachers instill in their students a love of learning. They radiate a passion for life, inspire a desire to succeed and take very seriously the role they have in helping to shape a child’s life. Being a teacher, particularly at the kindergarten through 12th grade level, brings with it many responsibilities. It is a job that can have huge personal rewards, but at times can be overlooked when it comes to receiving expressions of gratitude and thanks that these dedicated men and women so often deserve.

With this in mind, the Camas and Washougal school districts are calling on local residents to reach out and recognize teachers, past and present, who have had lasting impacts in their lives or their children’s lives.

The mayors of Camas and Washougal recently proclaimed Sept. 24 as Legendary Teacher Day, stating: “We often do not fully understand and recognize the profound influence teachers have on our future until later in life; and it is important to take time to fully recognize the legendary teachers in our lives.”

Local residents can post messages of gratitude on the school districts’ Facebook pages or Twitter feeds using #teachlegendary.
