Newly discovered documents show the cost of replacing the century-old, seismically unstable Interstate 5 Bridge could be more than double the $6 billion estimate quoted by Interstate Bridge Replacement Program leaders since 2022.
Portland economist and urban policy analyst Joe Cortright is the former chair of the Oregon Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors and a former executive officer of the Oregon Legislature’s Trade and Economic Development Committee. He has been following the bridge-replacement saga for the past two decades, beginning with the failed Columbia River Crossing efforts in the early 2000s.
