Washougal National pro motocross: Washougal’s Kitchen places fifth at home course

Lawrence, Davies win titles at annual motocross event

Levi Kitchen of Washougal is still searching for his first podium finish as a pro at the Washougal National pro motocross event after finishing fifth in the 250 Class on Saturday at Washougal MX Park.

For the second time in as many races, Kitchen got caught up in an early crash in moto 1.

Landen Gordon crashed on turn 1, and Kitchen and Julie Beaumer got caught up in the spill.

Kitchen regrouped to stay within the top 25 after the first lap and top 15 after four laps. But he could not moved up any closer than sixth by the end of the first moto.

Another poor start in the second moto left Kitchen outside the top 10 in the first lap, leading to another sixth-place finish.

Kitchen finished in fifth place overall. In four appearances at Washougal as pro, Kitchen has never finished better than fifth.

Cole Davies of New Zealand won both motos to finish first. Ryder DiFrancesco of Bakersfield, Calif., was second in both motos to finish second, and Chance Hymas of Pocatello, Idaho, was third after two third-place finishes.

Preston Boespflug of Battle Ground finished 22nd.

Despite missing the podium, Kitchen left Washougal still atop the season standings for the 250 Class.

Kitchen entered with a season-high 24-point lead, but Davies’ victory shaved the margin down to just seven points.

Kitchen leads the series with 293 points, followed by Davies with 286 and Julien Beaumer with 268.

Season points leader Hunter Lawrence of Australia notched his fifth victory of the summer in the 450 Class. Lawrence finished second in the first moto and first in the second to beat out younger brother Jett Lawrence (1-3) for the overall title. Haiden Deegan of Temecula, Calif., (4-2) finished third. Kile Epperson of Camas finished 32nd in the 450 Class.

Hunter Lawrence widened his season lead in the 450 Class with 367 points. Jett Lawrence is second at 355 followed by Deegan with 298.

The AMA Pro Motocross Championship continues on Aug. 15 with the Unadilla National in New Berlin, N.Y. It begins a run of three events over three weeks before the season concludes with the Ironman National Finals on Aug. 29.
