Acid hoax case heads to Vancouver court Wednesday

The Washougal Safeway employee who has admitted to police she applied acid to her face is expected to make her first appearance in court Wednesday. Bethany Storro, of Vancouver, is scheduled to appear in front of Judge John Nichols, at 8:45 a.m., in Clark County Superior Court. She is facing three counts of second-degree theft by deception. They include aggravating circumstances against Storro because they involved Good Samaritan donations of more than $750.

Portland man sentenced in bank fraud case

The ringleader of a team of thieves that spent seven years burglarizing office buildings, including those in Camas and Vancouver, will serve jail time and pay restitution to his victims. Antione Lamont Lawrence, formerly of Portland, Ore., pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud in May. He was sentenced last week by U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman. According to the plea agreement, he will serve 97 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and pay nearly $700,000 in restitution.

Youth help celebrate ground breaking for new learning center at Clark College

As Clark College embarked on construction of the first phase of its new Early Childhood Learning Center, word came that a significant donation was made to help fund the second phase. The early childhood education and family life departments provide a curriculum and a learning laboratory for early childhood educators, guide and partner with community parents and families, and equip children with what faulty members describe as a full spectrum of skills and training for life.

Body of Camas man discovered near train tracks

A man's body was discovered near the railroad tracks in Camas early Sunday morning. According to a press release released Monday afternoon by the Camas Police Department, the man has been identified as 22-year-old Sami Nesta-Serrano of Camas. At 6:15 a.m. on Sunday, 911 officials called for Camas fire and police and BNSF Railway to respond to the tracks at Southeast Sixth Avenue and Franklin Street, near the Washougal River.

Theft charges are filed in acid hoax case

The woman who claimed that a stranger threw an unknown substance on her face is facing three counts of second-degree theft by deception. They include aggravating circumstances against Bethany Storro because they involved Good Samaritan donors of more than $750, according to Tony Golik, Clark County deputy prosecuting attorney with the major crimes unit. The victims, listed in a Clark County Superior Court document filed Monday, include Safeway ($3,000), Anytime Fitness ($800) and Michael Kite, of California ($1,000).

Range shooting at Wildlife League can continue

Trap shooting will continue to be allowed at the Camas-Washougal Wildlife League -- at least for the time being. The Camas City Council gave the go-ahead last night for the longtime local club located at 811 S.E. Leadbetter Road to continue its regular operations as members work with the surrounding property owner CJ Dens Land Co., and the city to produce an agreement that will layout a firm time line as to when shooting will cease for good.

Newly formed Clark County Arts Commission includes two local residents

A former Port of Camas-Washougal commissioner and an opera singer are among the members of a new Clark County Arts Commission. Donna Roberge Nozel and Martha Martin have been appointed by the Clark County Commission to serve four-year terms. Nozel, a port commissioner from 1998 through 2000, describes herself as "a total amateur in oil painting and photography," as well as "a true opera lover but not a singer."

Body of Camas man discovered near train tracks

The body of a Camas man was found near the railroad tracks in Camas early Sunday morning. According to a press release issued just after 3 p.m. today by the Camas Police Department, the person has been identified as 22-year-old Sami Nesta-Serrano of Camas.

Flamingo flocks find homes in Camas and Washougal

Front yards around Camas and Washougal are being flocked...for a good cause. Dozens of festive, roosting pink plastic flamingos are popping up in front of homes as part of a fundraiser to support the Washougal High School 2011 Grad Night drug- and alcohol-free party.

"I just believe that anyone who has ever wanted cats or any animal should get involved with this, if they've got the space and the time," she said. "It's not that hard and complicated - just giving them love and attention." A dinner and auction, to benefit the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society, are planned for Saturday, at 5:30 p.m., at Heathman Lodge, 7801 N.E. Greenwood Drive, Vancouver.

Fostering for the future

For Tiffany Personett and her mother Brenda, an early summer picnic near the former Riverside Bowl in Camas led to new volunteer opportunities as foster pet parents for the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society. While eating lunch, they noticed a woman drop off a box behind the former bowling alley. Tiffany and Brenda retrieved three kittens found near the box after the woman left.
