Liao earns Eagle Scout rank Jonathan Liao of Camas has earned his Eagle Scout, the highest honor given by the Boy Scouts of America. Liao, 16, will be recognized in a ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Camas United Methodist Church.
The Camas High School Science Olympiad team showed they could compete with the best in the nation at a recent tournament in Orlando. On Saturday, May 19, the team placed 11th in the competition, the highest in school history. There are no school classifications, so the Papermakers' win was against schools of all sizes, both public and private. Students medalled in five events. The most notable was Marcus Bintz and Rachel Fadlovich, who were named national champions in the "Disease Detectives" portion of the competition. They will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta for themselves and two coaches.

'Pridelands' to open this weekend Christian Youth Theatre will perform “Pridelands,” this weekend at the Washburn Performing Arts Center at Washougal High School, 1201 39th St. The play is inspired by the story of “The Lion King,” and celebrates music, dance and harmony. It incorporates African dance rhythms, colorful comedic characters and a coming-of-age story.
The FIRST Robotics Team Mean Machine, based out of Camas, recently competed in the World Championships in St. Louis Missouri in the Newton Division. After three days of matches against the best in the world, Team Mean Machine was chosen by the second seeded team from Santa Barbara and another Michigan team to be a part of their alliance, earning them a spot in the elimination round.
Students at Hathaway Elementary School are reaping the benefits after their teacher secured grants to purchase nearly $4,000 worth of xylophones, metallophones, and other mallet instruments.Amy Switzer applied and received a $1,000 Creative Classroom Grant from the Washougal Schools Foundation, and more than $3,000 from the school's Booster Club. "It is awesome to work in a district that supports its music programs," she said.
In an effort to define what makes a healthy community, Washougal has been selected for a statewide grant that will focus on prevention and intervention. It is one of two cities in Clark County, and 12 in the state, that were chosen for the 4-year Prevention Redesign Initiative. "Washougal was selected based on community readiness and responsiveness," said Camille Saari, who will coordinate the local grant.
Skyridge to perform 'Oklahoma' Skyridge Middle School students will presenet the play, "Oklahoma" at the Camas High School Theater Thursday, May 17 through Saturday, May 19 at 7 p.m.
Citing an inequitable socioeconomic balance and the unnecessary splitting of neighborhoods, several parents voiced their concerns regarding the Camas School District's proposed boundary changes at a meeting last night. "Really, what we want for our district is to have everyone be treated fairly," said Emily Gillespie, a Helen Baller parent. "My children attend the fourth closest school to our house. All the surrounding neighbors attend other schools. Our neighborhood is being used to socioeconomically balance Baller. There's a bus that goes by my house that drops kids off at Grass Valley."
