Health department encourages up-to-date immunizations before school starts

With school starting in just a few weeks, Clark County Public Health department is encouraging parents to schedule their children for a vaccine update. "Vaccinations are important because they protect children against serious and preventable illnesses, some of which have no cure or treatment," said Robin VanLiew of the health department. "Vaccinations not only protect the children receiving them, but the children around them as well, including their younger siblings."

Local students land on CWU spring honor roll

Several students from the Camas-Washougal area made the spring honor roll at Central Washington University. In order to be eligible for the honor roll, students must earn at least a 3.5 GPA or better, and take 12 graded credits. Students include Megan Brech, Michael Gonzalez, Rebecca Dittrich, Clifton Coulter, all of Camas; and Radnilyn Vaughn, Kelvin Crockford and Amanda Schlegel, all of Washougal.

WHS grad is attending leadership institute in D.C.

This summer, Patrick McCarthy, a recent Washougal High School graduate, will be joining more than 200 of his peers from across the nation to participate in Bank of America's Student Leaders program. McCarthy has participated in the Presidential and Governor's Award Planning Committee, American Cancer Society "Relay for Life", Red Cross Club and Share House. As teens are searching for ways to spend their summers in a down economy, Bank of America is investing $1 million in paid, eight-week summer internships for students at community nonprofits in 44 neighborhoods across the country. McCarthy is spending his summer in Portland, at the Evergreen Habitat for Humanity site. In addition to the paid internship, he is attending Bank of America's weeklong Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. this week.

Summer camps coming soon

Parents, are your kids starting to use the "b" word at home? As in, "I'm bored!" If so, there will be three different day camps coming up soon to help. Kathy Marty, a local artist and teacher at River Homelink in Camas, will be leading the camps.

Achievers Scholarship recipients named

The Camas School District has established a new scholarship named after recently retired Assistant Superintendent Tanis Knight. Three recent graduates, two from Camas High School and one from Hayes Freedom High School, are the recipients of the 2010 Tanis Knight Achievers Scholarship. The scholarship criteria includes demonstrating determination to achieve personal and academic goals throughout high school, overcoming adversity and having future goals and plans.
