Three Hockinson defenders reach out in vain, but they are unable to stop Michael McElory. The Washougal High School senior racked up 20 points on "Senior Night," which helped the Panthers beat the Hawks 61-51.

Washougal boys handle Hockinson

After a deflating loss at Mark Morris, the Washougal High School boys basketball team turned the corner and defeated Hockinson for the first time in school history. "This win shows the maturation of this team," said head coach Malcolm Estes. "The next play is all that matters. These boys do such a great job of fighting on. They're better at it than me." Hockinson hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game, but Jaden Jantzer tied it up with a three of his own for the Panthers. The teams traded baskets on the next few plays. Aaron Deister delivered two points off a steal and Michael McElroy drove around the defenders to score four points, but the Washougal students stayed in their seats and bit down on their tongues.

Winning season leads Washougal girls basketball team to district tournament

Backed by the best record since Charlie Boyce became head coach six years ago, the 11-9 Washougal girls basketball team is going to River Ridge Friday to play in the first round of the district tournament. "We're going to go out there and play hard, scrap, run as fast as we can and hope things turn our way," Boyce said. "We couldn't have gotten this far without our seniors. This is such a great opportunity for them and the ones we have coming back." This is a dream come true for seniors Savanna McDowell and Megan Townsend. This rest of the Panthers are underclassmen. "It just feels awesome to have a winning season," Townsend said. "Our entire team deserves it."

Chartrand first Camas bowling champion

Porsche Chartrand dreamed of this moment since she started rolling bowling balls down the lanes at the age of 11. "To win any tournament is something I've always wanted," said the 17-year-old Camas High School junior. "It feels good to be the first Camas district bowling champion. I walk a little taller now, that's for sure." Chartrand made her dream come true by racking up scores of 205, 198 and 226 for a combined series of 629 Friday, at Allen's Crosley Lanes near downtown Vancouver. Her 226-game set a new school record and helped the Papermaker defeat Stacy Dettling of Evergreen High School for the 4A district championship medal by five pins.

Home with their horses

For one weekend during the Washington High School Equestrian Teams' season, the Camas and Washougal horseback riders get to show what their horses can do in front of family and friends at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Ridgefield. "A lot of people can come and watch us when they normally couldn't because the meets are so far away from home," said Washougal High School Senior Drill Team captain Tenley Stedman. "It makes us feel important, just like basketball is important and wrestling is important to our school."

Double heartbreak for Camas boys basketball

Lightning didn't strike twice for Jordan Lenard and the Camas High School boys basketball team. Skyview gained a seven-point advantage before the Papermakers came roaring back in the final minute of the Jan. 22 home game. A steal by Brandon Nguyen and a bucket in transition brought the Camas crowd to its feet. Trent Johnson then picked off a pass and Trevor Jasinsky made two foul shots to cut the lead down to three points. Skyview added a point at the foul line, and then Lenard nailed a 3-pointer to bring the Papermakers all the way back to within one. "I caught it in rhythm and just shot it. It felt so good when it went in," Lenard said. "Coach said, 'we're not out of this game. Anything can happen. Just keep playing hard.' We got a few steals and grabbed the momentum."
