The Washougal boys basketball players stepped onto the floor of their longtime Camas rivals and made a statement. In the defining moment of their eight-game winning streak to start the season, the Panthers celebrated a 64-44 victory over the Papermakers Dec. 20, at Camas High School. "It's always big to win at Camas. It's a rivalry that's important to both communities," said Washougal head coach Malcolm Estes. "In the 32 years I've been in Washougal, the games with Camas have always been a battle. Especially for those first 20 years I was here. It would be nice to see that again."

After just four days off for Christmas, the Camas girls basketball team is back on the floor this week in the Nike Interstate Shootout at Lake Oswego High School. The Papermakers played South Eugene this morning, in the first round of the tournament. Results were still pending as of press deadlines. Win or lose, Camas will play three more games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. "We've built some good momentum in the past four games, and hopefully we can continue that momentum right into league," said head coach Chuck Knight. "We want to use this tournament to get us fully tuned up. After Christmas break, it seems like we have a game every other day."

"We yell it as loud as we can." The North County co-op program brings swimmers from Camas, Washougal, Hockinson, Prairie, Battle Ground and Woodland high schools together at LaCamas Swim & Sport. It has become a platform where Panthers and Papermakers can train together and cheer each other on during the meets. "It's like a whole new sport and something completely different to do for our school," Milojevic said. "A lot of my friends and my teachers like it, but probably only half of the school knows about it."

Washougal boys are hungry for more

Feasting on a 6-0 start to the season, the Washougal High School boys basketball players are hungry for more. "So far, we're playing good. We keep getting better every single day," said junior forward Aaron Diester. "We can't level off now. We got to be playing our best ball by the time league starts because that's when it really matters." Tested for the first time Friday night, the Panthers walked out of Fort Vancouver Trapper territory with a 65-62 victory intact. Karsten Short provided 13 points on offense and a superior effort on defense. Diester and Isaac Bischoff both netted 11 points. Down the stretch, it was Washougal who grabbed the rebounds, made the foul shots and got to the loose balls to secure the victory.
