Cancer survivor Mary LaFrance will perform a solo concert Saturday, at Bethel Community Church.

‘Leap of faith’ concert presented by local singer at Washougal church

As the youngest of 10 siblings in a musical family, Mary LaFrance grew up surrounded by melodies. She began singing when she was 4, and performing with her family in church when she was 5. "It's been a huge chunk of my life," she said. On Saturday, LaFrance will perform her first solo concert at Bethel Community Church, 1438 "B" St., in Washougal. The concert, which begins at 6 p.m., is free. Donations are being accepted to help LaFrance pay for musical expenses and help the church purchase new sound equipment.

Thursday marked a "significant day" in the deconstruction of the SS Davy Crockett, as the final 60-foot long, 55,000 pound, rusty metal section of the derelict barge was slowly lifted from the waters of the Columbia River.

A 2006 Nissan Titan truck was pulled out of Lacamas Lake in Camas Monday at noon by employees with Orchards Towing & Recovery. The truck's emergency brake had been released near the launch ramp at Heritage Park, around 12:15 a.m. Responding agencies included the Camas Police and Fire departments, Clark County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol Unit, Southwest Washington Organization of Rescue Divers and the Department of Ecology. After the truck was retrieved, material was used to absorb gasoline and oil. According to CPD dispatch records, the registered owner of the truck is Joseph Giles, of Portland.

Adventure awaits Washougal couple in China

Tossing aside the notion that retirement is a time to slow down and take it easy, a Washougal couple is preparing to set out on what they anticipate will be the adventure of a lifetime. In a matter of days, Pat and Ernie Suggs will leave their comfortable home and close-knit family, which includes six daughters and seven grandchildren, to spend the next year as English teachers in China. At the moment, they know very little about what lies ahead. They have yet to be told the specific number of pupils who will be taking their classes, the English knowledge base of those students, or what teaching tools will be available.

The Camas Hotel: Historic building celebrates 100 years as a local landmark

From pistachio-green walls to lawsuits to ghosts, the Camas Hotel has seen it all. The hotel, the oldest commercial building in downtown Camas, celebrates its 100th birthday this year. Built in 1911 by Paul Hinz, the hotel was originally named the Commercial Hotel because the Camas Hotel was already a business across the street.

The Washougal City Council is expected to consider continuing an emergency moratorium on establishing or operating marijuana collective gardens or dispensaries within city limits.
