Columbia Gorge HomeLink proposal continues to gain community support

After learning that River HomeLink in Camas would be moving back to Brush Prairie, within the Battle Ground School District a group of parents got together to see what could be done about it. The result of this meeting was the concept for Columbia Gorge HomeLink, a similar program, which would be located somewhere in the Camas or Washougal area. Local couple Janelle and David Stanton are spearheading the effort to start a new program. River HomeLink was classified as an "alternative learning experience," by the state. While it was under the umbrella of the Battle Ground School District, there was also heavy parental support. This is described as a "parent-public school partnership." Program supporters said it offers the best of both worlds.

Heidi Curley, owner of the historic Farrell house in Camas, hopes to one day open her property up to be used for catered events that would draw anywhere from 10 to 100 people. Some neighbors have voiced concern about the proposal. A public hearing will be held July 28.

The owner of the historic Farrell house has dreams of one day making her home and property the site of tea parties, weddings, anniversary celebrations, and other special events -- once again opening the dramatic landmark house to the community.

Port receives funds to develop Hambleton cleanup plan

The Port of Camas-Washougal has received a $200,000 grant that could lead to the cleanup of the former Hambleton Lumber Company site. Port Executive Director David Ripp announced receipt of the grant from the Washington Department of Ecology during the July 5 port commission meeting. Commissioners are expected to approve a professional services agreement with Maul, Foster and Alongi July 19. The consulting firm would analyze the site and determine a cleanup plan. According to Ripp, the port is exploring the opportunity to acquire, cleanup and redevelop property along the waterfront that extends east of its existing marina and connects to port-owned property at Sixth Street in Washougal.

Primary election candidates seeking seats on the Washougal City Council have been invited to participate in an upcoming forum presented by the League of Women Voters of Clark County.

Camas Ward 3 seat draws two candidates

Two candidates stepped forward this week to file with the Clark County Elections Office for the vacant Ward 3 position on the Camas City Council. Margaret Tweet and Shannon Turk will have their names appear on the Nov. 8 General Election ballot. They will be competing to serve a portion of the 2.5 years remaining on Scott Higgins' term, from Dec. 5, 2011 to Dec. 31, 2013. The special three-day filing period ended Friday at 5 p.m.

Ward 3 seat draws two candidates so far

Two candidates have stepped forward this week to file with the Clark County Elections Office for the vacant Ward 3 position on the Camas City Council.

Patriot Guard Riders participate in a flag line outside Straub's Funeral Home, in Camas Friday, during the memorial service for Master Sgt. Ed Spencer. Spencer, of Washougal, was a decorated Army veteran who served two tours in Vietnam. "It is our way of honoring and thanking Master Sgt. Spencer for the self-sacrifices he made by serving our country," said Lynn Vaughn, a Southwest Washington ride captain. "If it were not for men and women such as he, there would be no United States of America."

Honoring patriotic service

As local residents filled up their grocery carts and gas tanks at the Camas Safeway, Friday in preparation for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, there were numerous motorcyclists gathering nearby to honor a Vietnam veteran. Members of the Patriot Guard Riders assembled in the Safeway parking lot, prior to the memorial service for Master Sgt. Ed Spencer, 72, of Washougal. Spencer received four Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and one Silver Star during his 22 years in the Army. That included two tours and hand-to-hand combat in Vietnam.
