The Davy Crockett, a converted 431-foot flat deck barge, released an estimated 70-gallons of oil during a commercial salvage on Jan. 27. On Feb. 3, ballasting operations began after a week of planning by the Coast Guard, Washington Department of Ecology and Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. The stern was lowered a total of 17-feet in order to safely inspect the remaining compartments.

Crews continue to cleanup oil from SS Davy Crockett

Ballasting operations were completed Thursday night on the SS Davy Crockett, the derelict ship moored on the north shore of the Columbia River near Camas. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, during the operation crews lowered the stern 17-feet to allow four remotely operated pumps to flood cargo hold compartments with approximately 600,000 gallons of water. The goal is to determine the location of pollutants that remain on the vessel. "Long-term salvage plans or time line estimates would be speculative until more is known about pollutants contained within the compartments of the Davy Crockett," said Coast Guard Capt. Daniel LeBlanc, federal on-scene coordinator. "Parallel to the recovery and salvage operation, an investigation is being conducted into the events leading up to the spill of oil."

Camas announces termination of fire chief

The city of Camas has fired its fire chief. Camas Mayor Paul Dennis announced Friday that Fire Chief Leo Leon's employment with the city would end effective Jan. 31. According to a press release, the decision was made because Leon's "leadership of the Camas Fire Department has not been meeting expectations." "I appreciated that Leo accepted the position six years ago, and he accomplished much -- especially in the first several years," said City Administrator Lloyd Halverson in a statement. "More recently, there have been setbacks, confidence has been lost, and now it is time for a change in the leadership of the fire department. Mayor Dennis as the appointing authority has acted decisively, and now it is time to focus on the future."

Camas School District resolves Title IX complaint

The Camas School District has entered into an agreement with the United States Department of Education, office of civil rights, over a complaint of discrimination in athletics. The complaint, filed on Aug. 23, alleges that the district is discriminating against female middle and high school students on the basis of gender, by failing to provide them with equal athletic opportunities. Since the district has agreed to report its activities regarding female students in athletics, the OCR will no longer investigate the complaint. It states that, "This agreement resolves the allegation OCR has accepted for resolution as a result of the above referenced complaint and does not constitute an admission by the district of any violation of Title IX...or any other law."
