A Washougal man has earned a prestigious community award. Jordan Boldt was honored as the 2013 General George C. Marshall Public Leadership Award recipient. He is the 24th recipient of the annual award that honors the legacy of one-time Vancouver resident General George C. Marshall. Boldt has been the executive director of the Vancouver Farmers Market since February 2010. He is responsible for managing more than 175 vendors that serve approximately 15,000 people each weekend during the market's eight-month season, which opened for its 24th year on Saturday a Sixth and Esther streets in downtown. He was nominated by Madeline Delumba and Jim Mains, who commented that Boldt has helped the market thrive and grow.

When people who want more government regulations argue in favor of a new mandate on employers, they usually say, "Well, one more rule won't break the bank." However, seemingly harmless regulations have a cumulative effect that eventually cripple employers and prevent entrepreneurs from creating the jobs needed to fix our weak economy.
I learned to type on an electric typewriter. Embarrassing, but true. Of course, we had computers 22 years ago when I was in high school, but their integration into the day-to-day school curriculum was minimal. We used them to type up term papers and special reports. Research was done using books, encyclopedias and periodicals at the school and public libraries.

Students at Jemtegaard Middle School in Washougal garnered several awards at the Future Business Leaders of America 2013 Winter Business Leadership Conference recently. It is the only middle school chapter in the region, so the wins came against high school competitors. According to JMS advisor Susan Nesmith, the mission of the FBLA is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs and prepare students for careers in business and business-related fields. "This is the fourth year of FBLA at JMS and we have placed in regionals every year," Nesmith said. "I am so proud of my kids. They worked really hard to compete against high schools students."
WSD boundary requests due May 17 The Washougal School District is accepting applications for in-district boundary exceptions for 2013-14. All families making the request to have their child attend a Washougal school other than their designated neighborhood school must complete a new transfer request every year.
