Family Resource Centers can take pressure off parents this holiday season

The holidays are commonly known as a time for joy, happiness and spending quality time with loved ones. Unfortunately, it is also a season filled with stress and anxiety for families across Washington state.

Many parents feel a looming sense of dread each December about spending too much or not having enough money for celebrations and gifts, and navigating family expectations and conflicts adds an extra layer of stress to the situation. Fortunately, there are resources available for folks who are feeling the pinch this holiday season. Family Resource Centers (FRCs) provide comprehensive support to families in need, including parenting support and education, navigation of care and social services, mental health counseling, early learning and afterschool activities, family financial planning, job training and much more.

With these services, FRCs can give parents the boost they need this December, providing additional support so they don’t need to decide between basic necessities and holiday festivities. They can also provide educational services that will help prepare for the complicated family dynamics that often accompany the holiday season.

Akin, which is the product of a recent merger between Childhaven and Children’s Home Society of Washington, operates seven Family Resource Centers across Washington state, including one in Washougal. As one of the state’s largest family services nonprofits, Akin is championing FRCs as a better way to invest in families and wants to ensure everyone in Washington knows about the support available to them.

To learn more about Family Resource Center offerings visit Akin’s website at akinfamily.org/support or call 206-695-3200. Here’s to a happy and stress-free holiday season, for all of us.
