A city of Washougal employee’s decisive actions saved the lives of a Washougal resident’s chickens last month.

On the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 31, City lead maintenance worker Allen Faler was driving down Washougal River Road when he witnessed smoke emanating from a resident’s chicken coop and “promptly jumped into action,” according to a social media post by the City.

“With over half a dozen chickens trapped inside, Allen courageously battled smoke and flames, displaying no regard for his own safety as he rescued all the hens, extinguished the fire, and promptly notified the owners,” the post states. “If the chickens could talk, we’re sure they’d probably egg-spress their gratitude to Allen, so instead, we’re doing it here.”
