The Salvation Army of Camas-Washougal will host a volunteer training class for the Washougal Community Severe Weather Shelter at 6 p.m. Jan. 14 at 1612 “I” Street, Washougal.
The shelter was rehomed from the Washougal Community Center to The Salvation Army in early 2025. It opened on 12 nights in January and February, welcoming 77 guests with the help of eight to 10 volunteers per night, according to CWSA community service director Jessica Wheeler.
The shelter is activated when temperatures drop to 30 degrees or below overnight and/or in response to dangerous severe cold weather events.
To become a volunteer, a person must attend a training session and pass a background check.
