The Washougal School District has announced several administrative appointments for the 2026-27 school year, including a new director of teaching and learning, an interim elementary principal and a new executive director of business services.

Wendy Morrill, who has served as principal of Hathaway Elementary School for the past six years, has been named the district’s director of teaching and learning.

Morrill has worked in the Washougal School District for 25 years, including 19 years as a teacher. She also has served as a dean of students, a new teacher mentor, and Title I and Learning Assistance Program coordinator.

Superintendent Aaron Hansen said Morrill’s experience as an instructional leader made her a strong fit for the position.

“Wendy’s proven impact as an instructional leader is evident throughout her time at Hathaway, where she has demonstrated thoughtful leadership that results in improved student achievement while building a caring school culture so students thrive,” Hansen said in a news release. “Her vision will be invaluable as we consistently find the best ways to support our students and continue to elevate academic excellence across the entire Washougal community.”

Morrill said she is committed to helping all students reach their full potential.

“I am eager to get into classrooms and see and hear our teachers and students in action,” Morrill said. “I believe that strong partnerships between teachers, students, staff and families are the key to student success.”

Jason Foster will serve as interim principal of Hathaway Elementary during the 2026-27 school year.

Foster previously served as principal of Washougal Learning Academy and has worked as an English and science teacher in the district for eight years. He also served as dean of students at Hathaway Elementary.

“We are fortunate to have Jason step into the role of interim principal for the 2026-27 school year,” Hansen said. “His existing understanding of Hathaway’s students, staff and unique culture, combined with his leadership experience, will be beneficial during this transition.”

The district also named Shelese McConnell as executive director of business services.

McConnell has supported the district for the past two years through a contract with ESD 112. She previously served for seven years as finance director for the North Beach School District and holds an accounting degree from Western Washington University.

“She has played a major part in our ongoing efforts to improve our financial health,” Hansen said. “Shelese consistently demonstrates a high level of financial competence, a strong desire to collaborate and effective communication. She is a natural problem-solver, and we are incredibly fortunate to have her leadership guiding our business services department permanently.”
