While pregnant with her second child in 2024, Terry Wiener had a routine genetic screening that revealed she carries the gene for adrenoleukodystrophy, a rare and devastating neurological disease that can rob children of their ability to walk, speak, see and survive.

Because ALD is linked to the X chromosome, each of her children had a 50 percent chance of inheriting the gene, which disproportionately affects males. Wiener and her husband, Adam, immediately tested their 3-year-old son, Theodore. His test came back positive.
