Excelsior names 'Phoenix on Fire' Matthew Quist is the December student of the month at Excelsior High, Washougal's alternative school. The "Phoenix on Fire," award goes to a student who is, "inspiring, responsible, respectful, has great attendance, an excellent work ethic and positive attitude."
Every first Friday in December since 2008, students in the Camas and Washougal school districts have worked feverishly to see which among them could amass the most food for local charities during the annual Stuff the Bus food drive. With the win came a trophy and a year's worth of bragging rights for their school. But this year, things were noticeably different in two regards. For the first time ever, Stuff the Bus was postponed due to inclement weather. Also, students from the high schools worked as a team instead of a competition. The only winners were the local charitable organizations, that received large quantities of food.
Looking for something the kids can do during winter break?If so, the local area offers several camps on most days school is closed. The Camas Community Center is hosting two holiday-themed camps on Dec. 23 and 24 and Jan. 30 and 31. "There are always so many last minute things for parents to get done before Christmas so our first session of camp is great for that," said Tammy Connolly, recreation coordinator. "Get the rest of your shopping and wrapping done, clean house or just enjoy some quiet time. And then you always need a few days to clean up afterward, so the second session comes in handy there."
Connell graduates from pilot training Kristen Connell, 2008 graduate of Camas High School, and 2012 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, graduated from pilot training at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla., on Nov. 15.
Erin Carson of Camas is among 55 Linfield College students participating this fall in a study abroad program in China. Carson is studying at the China Studies Institute at Peking University in Beijing and living in student residence halls.
The Washougal Schools Foundation will host a Christmas Holiday Family Concert today, at 7 p.m., at the Washburn Auditorium at Washougal High School, 1201 39th St.
Snow began to fall early this morning in Camas-Washougal, and continues as of 9:45 a.m. Forecasters are predicting a dusting of up to 1 inch of snow in the Portland-Vancouver metro area.
Gifts are a big part of the holiday season. But the Camas-Washougal Rotary Club likes to kick it off a bit earlier with its Gift of Words project. The dictionaries are given to third-grade students, and the effort is part of a national undertaking by the service club to promote literacy in local communities. Locally, the dictionaries are presented by representatives from Rotary along with Camas School Superintendent Mike Nerland and Washougal School Superintendent Dawn Tarzian.
'Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jr.' continues The Journey Theater Arts Group production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jr.," will continue through Sunday at The Washburn Performing Arts Center at Washougal High School, 1201 39th St. The musical is based on the classic movie, with a full score of new songs and dance numbers.
