Girl scouts help ‘residents’ at local humane society

The feline residents of the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society are now enjoying a cool breeze throughout their living quarters, thanks to a donation from some local Girl Scouts.Troop 40382 members were prompted to purchase the fans as a community service project, using the proceeds of their cookie sales and other fundraisers. Last year, they shopped for and donated pet food, toys and other needed items to the approximately 80 cats living at the shelter. Emma Spaeth said, "It was really hot in the cat (building), so it's great we're helping so many at once." Savanna Slocum agreed. "This made me feel happy because it is always nice to help pets that are in need."

Sister city friendships span the test of time

A delegation of students, educators and city leaders from Japan will arrive in Camas on Saturday. The group from the town of Taki, sister city to Camas, will spend five days in the area. In addition to 20 middle school students, the delegation will be led by Taki Mayor Yukio Kubo, and will include a high school principal, an English teacher, city clerk, travel guide, and an interpreter.

Camas woman named to Clark College board

A Camas resident will serve as trustee at the school where her college education began. Rekah Strong, who attended Clark for a year in 1993-94, has recently been named to its Board of Trustees by Gov. Chris Gregoire. Her term will begin Oct. 1. She will succeed Rhona Sen Hoss, who has served as a trustee for 10 years. "Rekah's commitment to community and its success makes her a valuable asset to the board," said Gregoire in a press release. "She cares about the people she serves and understands the importance of a solid foundation in education. I welcome her to this new role." Clark College President Robert K. Knight said, "Rekah Strong is a well-respected leader in the community. We know that she will be a great advocate for our students and Clark College."

Rotary program gives away 200 backpacks to children in Camas and Washougal

Picking out school supplies and a new backpack is a much-anticipated tradition in most families. However, due to household budgets that have been stretched to the breaking point, many school kids begin the new year without these items. But thanks to the generosity of the Camas-Washougal Rotary Club's backpack program, 200 local elementary school students started classes on the right foot.
