Ellie Boon and Megan O'Neill helped each other and the Washougal High School soccer team get back on track. After suffering their first league loss of the season, the Panthers bounced back by beating the Woodland Beavers 2-0 Thursday. Boon scored the first goal on a pass from O'Neill. In the second half, Boon returned the favor by assisting on O'Neill's goal.
The howling inside Fishback Stadium could be heard all across town Friday night, and then there was silence. Colton Sullivan kicked a 36-yard field goal through the uprights as time expired in the first half to give the Washougal Panthers a 16-14 lead. Sullivan also scored on a 6-yard touchdown run, and Nathan Adams caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Howard.
Camas wins big at home, while Washougal stumbles in the second half.
After the defending district and league champions in volleyball clashed on Sept. 28 at Prairie High School, Camas is still undefeated. The Papermakers overwhelmed the Falcons 25-18 in set one and 25-16 in set two. After Prairie rallied back 25-21 in set three, the critical fourth set became an all out war between the two rivals. The Falcons came out firing for a 12-6 advantage, before the Papermakers fought back within two points twice. Prairie's lead dropped to 17-15, rose up to 19-15 on a kill and an ace, and dipped back down to 20-18. Suddenly, the score was tied at 20-20.
Brothers followed in each other's footsteps for the Camas High School football team Friday. The Papermakers steam rolled the Prairie Falcons 55-7 at District Stadium, in Battle Ground. Zack Marshall scored three times and increased his season total to 11 touchdowns. The first two came on a couple of carries across the goal line in the first quarter. "I didn't get any touchdowns last week, so it felt good," the junior said. "Even if they came on only three carries for three yards."
After an exciting 24 minutes of football Friday at Longview Memorial Stadium, the Washougal Panthers were in the game. R.A. Long ran for touchdowns of 35 and 58 yards in the first half, but both times Washougal answered. The Panthers scored 15 points in the second quarter on a 2-yard TD run by Sam O'Hara, a 2-yard TD run by Aleks Arzhanov and a 2-point conversion run by O'Hara. "Twice we faced adversity, and both times we were able to come back and score a touchdown," Arzhanov said. "We're determined. We're Washougal football. We don't give up."
Washougal and R.A. Long battled to a 15-15 tie at halftime, before the Lumberjacks scored three straight touchdowns. Camas turned a 48-0 halftime lead into a 55-7 victory over Prairie.
The fire hydrants on 39th Street in Washougal have been painted orange and black. What about the school bus? The Washougal High School football team earned its third victory away from home Friday, beating Clatskanie, Ore., 24-8. The road trip continues this week, as the Panthers travel to Longview Friday for their first league game against R.A. Long. Kickoff is at 7 p.m., at Longview Memorial Stadium.
Brent Hill, Addison Owen and the rest of the Camas High School football players wanted to make a statement Friday night. When two of the best teams from different leagues played for Clark County bragging rights at Doc Harris Stadium, it was the Papermakers who rolled along to a 28-12 victory over Skyview. Hill breezed past the defenders downfield, made an over-the-shoulder catch, and took the football into the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Logan Grindy.
Facing defending state champion Columbia River at the new Doc Harris Stadium Thursday gave the Camas High School girls soccer players plenty of motivation. Head coach Roland Minder had only a few words of inspiration, but they were important. "Listen up," he said in the huddle. "Nobody comes into your house and pushes you around."
