Just a week after competing in the state track and field championships, Washougal High School junior Gabriel Dinnel is busy training for an upcoming trip to Italy to represent the United States. The 17-year-old Panther said he is honored to represent the USA at an international trail running competition in the Sondrio region of Italy near the Swiss border on June 16.
Family and friends surrounded 15 of the top student athletes at Camas High School on May 30, National Letter of Intent Day, as they signed letters of intent to play sports at the college level. Following are the spring athletes from Camas who have committed to colleges around the region and country.
When Papermaker pitcher Kennedy Ferguson is on the mound, everyone on the Camas softball team feels confident about winning. Her grit and determination has motivated the Papermakers all season, and the trend flowed right into the state softball tournament in Spokane. The Papermakers made it all the way to the semi-finals finishing their impressive run with a fourth place finish against the best in the state.
It all came down to the 4x400 relay race on Saturday, May 26 at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma.
Camas distance runner Daniel Maton has done it again. The Camas junior defended his “best in the state” titles in the 1,600-meter and 800-meter events at the 4A state championship meet, held at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma, May 24-26.
The Panthers’ tennis duo of Beyonce Bea and Rebecca Boylan are district champions.
For three years, Kallie Sakamoto’s home golf course has been just a few hundred yards south of Washougal High School (WHS). Orchard Hills Country Club is where she honed her skills with countless practice rounds after school and on weekends as a member of the Washougal High girls golf team. It also is where she put those skills to work competing against other schools during three full seasons as the top golfer at WHS.
When Camas High softball pitcher Kennedy Ferguson took the mound against Union High on May 9, she knew a win would clinch a Papermaker league championship.
Camas’ No. 1 singles player senior Sam Merrill lost in districts to Andrea Basara of Battle Ground last season, so there were nerves when the two girls faced each other again this year at the 4A district tournament at Club Green Meadows.
Camas High School senior Brison Manandic loves soccer. Now, he’s figured out a way to share that passion with other young soccer hopefuls.
