The man who has been the 18th District's state senator for 17 years has decided not to run for another term. Just minutes after the deadline had passed to mark the end of filing week, Sen. Joe Zarelli, R-Ridgefield, ranking Republican on the Senate Ways & Means Committee, officially announced that he would not seek re-election.
Memorial Day will be acknowledged in the Camas-Washougal area with a three-day weekend of observances.
A Camas man was killed Saturday after being injured in a bicycling accident near Grand Ronde, Ore. According to Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Bridget Taylor, at approximately 2:25 p.m. on Highway 18 near milepost 24, Steven Dayley of Camas was riding a bicycle travelling westbound on the shoulder of the highway in a congested area. A westbound 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup, driven by Fred M. Moore III, 24, of Battle Ground, veered right to avoid traffic and struck Dayley.
Last week, the Camas School Board heard testimony regarding the Boundary Review Committee's recommendation for boundary adjustments. If approved, changes will be effective in the fall of 2013. The next step in the process will take place at the regularly scheduled school board meeting Tuesday, May 29 at the Zellerbach Administration Center, 841 N.E. 22nd Ave., at 5:30 p.m.
An upcoming event will allow local residents to get rid of yard debris. The city-sponsored Annual Yard Debris Disposal Day will be held Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Triangle Resources, 612 S.E. Union St.
Two local dentists are challenging local residents to beat them to the finish line during Saturday'ss Student Stride for Education. The fundraising event for the Washougal Schools Foundation will be held at Washougal High School’s Fishback Stadium. Kindergarten, first- and second-grade students will run a 1.5K course, while third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students will run a 2K. Middle and high school students and adults will take part in the 5K run or walk or as volunteers. The final heat of the day is The Dash, a race for the “pre-kindy” crowd — just one lap around the track.
Two local artists will lead a two-day retreat that will focus on creativity, fun and faith. Elida Field and Lara Blair are planning the "Ignite the heart: Women of Truth" event, which will include photography and collage/mixed media workshops. Sessions are planned for Friday, June 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Blair's studio, and Saturday, June 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Field's studio, both in Camas. An "after party" at 7 p.m., will include an art show for each participant and a guest.
Filing week for the upcoming Primary election began yesterday and continues through Friday at 5 p.m. While there are no Camas or Washougal government positions up for re-election this year, local voters will cast their ballots for positions including U.S. senator and representative, statewide administrative offices including governor, State Supreme Court, and state legislative positions.
The scheduling of a special Washougal City Council meeting has generated interest as well as questions about transparency. The meeting, which will be held Thursday, at 7 p.m., in the council chambers at City Hall, 1701 "C" St., is sponsored by council members Connie Jo Freeman, Jon Russell, Caryn Plinski and Jennifer McDaniel.
Citing an inequitable socioeconomic balance and the unnecessary splitting of neighborhoods, several parents voiced their concerns regarding the Camas School District's proposed boundary changes at a meeting last night. "Really, what we want for our district is to have everyone be treated fairly," said Emily Gillespie, a Helen Baller parent. "My children attend the fourth closest school to our house. All the surrounding neighbors attend other schools. Our neighborhood is being used to socioeconomically balance Baller. There's a bus that goes by my house that drops kids off at Grass Valley."
