A local group of students will be heading to the Oregon Robotics Tournament and Outreach Program FIRST LEGO League state tournament next month. The local team was selected from 20 teams at a recent qualifying competition in Vancouver, which earned them a spot in the state tournament next month. According to coach Jeff Hendricks, the Portland region is the largest in the country with 400 teams. Of those, 80 are selected to compete at the state competition. Mechanickidz was the only competing team with two awards, which were first place in robotics performance and third runner-up in the overall competition. Teams were judged in four key areas: Robotics performance, core values, team presentation and robot design.
Cape Horn-Skye Elementary students made more than 150 cards for Columbia Gorge-area residents serving overseas in the U.S. military. The Happy New Year cards will be sent in January as part of a gift package through the Gorge Heroes Club.

Four people were sent to the hospital on Thursday following an accident involving two vehicles in Washougal.
Law enforcement, including police in Camas and Washougal, will be conducting extra patrols in Clark County through Jan. 2 in an effort to target people who are driving under the influence.
