The Washougal Police Department has received a state grant to purchase a handheld narcotics analyzer aimed at improving officer safety and speeding drug identification in the field.
The funding comes through the Washington State Department of Commerce Justice Assistance Grant program and will cover the full cost of a Thermo Scientific TruNarc Handheld Narcotics Analyzer, including one year of supplies and instructor-led training for up to 12 officers. The total program cost is about $50,758.
“This investment allows our officers to do their jobs more safely and efficiently while better protecting the community we serve,” Washougal Police Chief Zane Freschette said in a news release. “By securing grant funding, we are able to bring advanced technology to Washougal without placing additional burden on local taxpayers.”
The handheld analyzer uses laser-based technology to scan substances through packaging, eliminating the need to open or handle them. Currently, officers rely on field test kits and lab analysis, which can require direct contact with substances and delay results. Department officials said the new device is expected to reduce exposure to dangerous drugs such as fentanyl while providing immediate, on-scene identification.
The department applied for the grant in February and will report program outcomes to the state.
