I-5 Bridge tolls closer to reality

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek signed a bill last week updating the state’s authorization to toll the Interstate 5 Bridge. The move follows a Washington bill Gov. Bob Ferguson signed last month that allows the state to issue $2.5 billion in state bonds to pay for part of the bridge replacement project before tolls make up that cost.

Officials warn about algae in Columbia

Clark County Public Health is warning residents of new dangers related to algae growths in local waterways. Benthic (that is, at the bottom of a body of water) algal mats found along the Columbia River have been linked to the death of two dogs.

Councilors hear residents’ views on fireworks

Clark County councilors listened to nearly two hours of public comment May 21 largely opposed to the idea of a ban on holiday fireworks, even though no councilor actually had proposed a ban.

Washington’s budget boosts public defense funding

While Clark County’s chief public defender says he’s grateful the Legislature more than doubled funding for public defense services in its new budget, he still wishes the state would do more.
