Port of Camas-Washougal Project Manager Larry Connolly was welcomed back to work by his co-workers in late October. He received a double lung transplant in July, at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, in Palo Alto, Calif.

Port employee enjoys a second chance at life

Larry Connolly plans to celebrate two birthdays a year, from now on. They will include his original date of birth in December as well as July 12 -- the date he received a double lung transplant. Connolly, 58, recently returned to work as project manager for the Port of Camas-Washougal -- much to the delight of his coworkers. "It's awesome," said Port Executive Director David Ripp. "It's so amazing to see how much he has changed and to see a positive outlook through him as well. Modern medicine is amazing." Port Office Assistant Jennifer Rilatos said she could not be happier about Connolly's "swift return."

Green light given to new ambulance transport rates

Last night the Camas City Council took another step in its ongoing efforts to stabilize the fledgling emergency medical services fund. A resolution to institute a 10 percent across-the-board increase in ambulance billing rates was unanimously approved. The new rates, effective as of Dec. 1, are $695 for in-district patients, and $1,110 for those living out of the service district. Mileage rates in-district will be $15.60 per mile, while they will be $18.20 for out of district. Non-emergencies transports will be $510, and a patient who is treated, but not transported, will be charged $180.

Man shot by his father in Camas

A Camas man was transported to the hospital Thursday night with non-life threatening injuries after he was allegedly shot by his father.

WaferTech unveiled its $1.6 million energy conservation project on Thursday. Industry executives, and local and regional elected officials were on hand to mark the occasion including (left to right) Camas Mayor Scott Higgins, 18th District State Sen. WaferTech’s new cooling system saves energy, dollars

On Thursday WaferTech unveiled a new $1.6 million, energy efficient cooling system at its Camas manufacturing facility. According to President KC Hsu, the company now has a solid hold on bragging rights for producing the lowest carbon footprint of any semi-conductor manufacturer in the world today. "Saving energy and being good environmental stewards is vital for TSMC and WaferTech," Hsu said during a ceremony and luncheon event attended by local political and business officials, and staff from government agencies involved in the endeavor.

Wheels turn at waterfront workshop

Some people who showed up at an open house had plenty to say regarding the revitalization of the former Hambleton Lumber Company site and additional waterfront properties. More than 50 individuals, as well as port commissioners and staff, attended the planning workshop Wednesday night.

Among the energy efficiency elements of Hayes Freedom High School is its use of solar panels. The roof is sloped to the south to take advantage of 2,500 square feet of the photovoltaic panels. The design produces 16 watts of power per square foot at peak hour, and up to 40 kilowatts of electricity, which equals 43,200 KW-hours per year, saving $3,100 in electric bills.

Hayes Freedom is named a Community Pride Design winner

Hayes Freedom High School in Camas will be among six facilities honored later this month as part of the annual Community Pride Design Awards. The projects are being recognized for their innovative approach to historic restoration, sustainability, community enhancement, public facilities and commercial development.

Washougal budget adds new police officer

The hiring of a new officer for the Washougal Police Department is expected to reduce the number of calls that each officer responds to. So far this year, there have been 16,545 calls. With 18 officers, that averages out to be 919 calls per officer, per year.
