Letters to the Editor for Feb. 25, 2014

City Council should support I-502 in Camas The demand for marijuana is spinning off enormous profits for drug cartels, for gangs, and for illegal dealers. Allowing regulated marijuana sales in Camas would allow us to refocus limited city resources on more important priorities and would redirect millions of dollars that are currently flowing to criminal organizations each year to legitimate businesses and provide a source of additional revenue for Camas.

Legislative town hall is Saturday in Camas

Rep. Liz Pike (R-Camas) and Sen. Ann Rivers (R-La Center) will host a town hall meeting Saturday, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Camas Police Department community room. Rivers and Pike will talk about bills advancing through the Legislature, provide an update of the process and seek input on legislation that concerns the 18th District.

Burma cookbook authors to speak

Robert Carmack and Morrison Polkinghorne, authors of "The Burma Cookbook: Recipes from the Land of a Million Pagodas," will present an hour-long illustrated history of Burma/Myanmar through its food on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 10:30 a.m., at the Camas Public Library.

Going bald to kick cancer

Pacific Crest Academy Catholic School teacher Angela Dasso took the lead at a fundraising event to conquer childhood cancer by shaving her head after a team of students and community members raised nearly $16,000. The Camas school now has nine students with shaved heads - eight boys and one girl. In addition, middle school teacher Dasso no longer has a head full of thick, shiny black hair. Last fall, Dasso challenged her students to raise $1,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. In return, she would shave her head.

Camas High School junior Jonathan Grall spent Jan. 27 through 31 in Olympia as a page for Sen. Ann Rivers, R-La Center. "I might be interested in running for state senator someday, so this was a great opportunity to learn what government work is like," he said.

Political aspirations

A Camas High School junior who aspires to one day run for public office recently spent time as a page in the state senate. Jonathan Grall, 16, worked as a page for 18th District Sen. Ann Rivers, Jan. 27 through 31, by participating in the Senate Page Program. He was one of 18 students ages 14 to 16 who took part in the program during the third week of the 2014 legislative session. Pages deliver mail, run errands, present the flag and learn parliamentary procedure. Students also work to draft a bill and engage in a mock session.

Bauer lands on dean's list Jonathan Andrew Bauer of Camas has been named to 2013 fall semester dean's list at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Students named to the dean's list must earn a GPA of at least 3.5 and take a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded course work.

Sundby-Van Dyken Dianne Sundby, of Washougal, and Darin Van Dyken, of Mt. Vernon, Wash., were married Nov. 30, 2013, at Bethel Community Church in Washougal. Gary Wallace officiated. A reception was held at Brickstone Ballroom in Vancouver.
