School notes for Feb. 11, 2014

Midles named to St. Mary's dean's list Madeleine Midles of Camas earned dean's list honors for the fall 2013 semester at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. To be named to the dean's list, students must maintain a 3.4 or higher GPA.

MacIntyre wins building level geography bee

Skyridge Middle School recently hosted its building level National Geographic Bee competition. The winner is Korrie MacIntyre, who claimed her second consecutive title and the chance at a $50,000 college scholarship. The eighth-grader will now advance to a written examination, which determines state competitors. The state-level competition will be held on April 4, followed by the national-level in Washington D.C., May 19 to 21.

Let voters decide on super-majority for tax increases

Last February, the Washington Supreme Court in a 6-3 ruling overturned the five-time voter-approved requirement that tax increases receive a supermajority vote of the Legislature or voter approval. In the past, when the court has invalidated a law passed by the people, the Legislature has sought to implement what the people want; Initiative 695 reducing car tab costs and Initiative-747 limiting property tax increases are recent examples.

The chief executive officer of a silkscreen supplies company will be the featured speaker at the next Clark County PubTalk. Ryan Moore will describe his journey from window washer and punk rock musician to founder of Ryonet, Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., in the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Artillery Barracks, 600 E. Hatheway Road, Vancouver.

Local accounting firm acquires another practice

An accounting firm with offices in Camas and Ridgefield recently acquired another practice. NWCPA, a certified public accounting and financial consulting firm, purchased the accounting and tax practice of Sharon Davenport.

Fashion show and teddy bear drive is Feb. 23

A fashion show and teddy bear drive will be held in Stevenson. On Sunday, Feb. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m., Rock Cove Assisted Living will host the event that includes a fashion show by A Boutique, vendors, chocolate and a complimentary glass of champagne or sparkling cider. Admission is a stuffed toy that will be donated to area domestic violence centers, emergency services and hospitals.

School notes for Feb. 4, 2014

Camas School District sets Childfind screening There will be free screenings for all children ages 3 to 5 living in the boundaries of the Camas School District on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The screenings test children in hearing, vision, speech, concepts and motor development, and last approximately one hour. Results are confidential and shared with parents only. Call the Special Services Department at 833-5570 for an appointment.

Camas woman serves with the Association of Fundraising Professionals

A local resident has been elected to a volunteer leadership position with the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Carol Van Natta, of Camas, serves on the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy board of directors. She is the executive director and chief development officer of the PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Foundation. Van Natta is a past president of the local AFP chapter.
