Editorial assertions about youth not based on facts

The July 30 Camas-Washougal Post-Record editorial "Is today's gridlock turning off tomorrow's leaders?" is an example of why such articles appear on the opinion pages of the newspaper. Unfortunately, several assertions are based on assumptions, not facts. The article suggests young people 18 to 25 years of age want no part of public service and the voting process because they "see so many power struggles, so much political posturing, nastiness and gridlock at all levels."

110 file for charter freeholder positions

More than 100 people last week filed last week for the 15 freeholder positions that will be filled as part of the Nov. 5 General Election. A total of five non-partisan freeholder positions will be elected from each of the three Clark County commissioner districts. Voters will cast ballots for candidates running for freeholder positions in their commissioner district. Camas and Washougal are located the Clark County Commission District 2. Monday was the last day for candidates to change their minds and withdraw as a freeholder candidate. For more information, visit www.clark.was.gov/elections.

‘Scoping’ period for proposed coal terminal draft EIS begins Friday

Clark County residents will have the opportunity to comment on the scope of an environmental impact statement for a proposed export terminal for shipping coal near Longview. One of five public meetings will be held Oct. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Clark County Fairgrounds, 17402 N.E. Delfel Road, in Ridgefield. The meeting will include an open house with information on the proposed project, staff available to answer questions and opportunities to provide oral or written comments. Millennium Bulk Terminals-Longview LLC is proposing to build and operate a terminal to export coal from the site of the former Reynolds Aluminum smelter in Cowlitz County. In addition to during the Oct. 9 hearing, public comments can be submitted at www.millenniumbulkeiswa.gov, by email to [email protected] or US mail to Millennium Bulk Terminals Longview EIS, c/o ICF International, 701 Second Ave., Ste. 550, Seattle, WA 98104.

Sheep dog trials return to Johnston Dairy

The Lacamas Valley Sheep Dog Trial will return to the Johnston Dairy in Camas, for its ninth year, from Aug. 15 to 18. This unique competition features handlers working in partnership with their dogs, sometimes at long distances, to move a small flock of sheep across a field through a series of gates, into a shedding ring and ultimately into a pen. According to organizers, the Lacamas Valley Sheep Dog Trial has grown into one of the largest and most popular events of its kind on the West Coast. Its reach is regional, drawing 115 handlers traveling from six states and British Columbia and featuring nearly 180 dogs competing in a variety of skill levels.
