Paid, volunteer firefighters deserve recognition I have been a volunteer victim at Port of Camas-Washougal emergency drills three times now, including at events held at the industrial park, the airport and the marina. Each time has been fun, rewarding and educational.
Citizens expect government to be fiscally responsible. Regarding the Columbia River Crossing, legislators are being asked to allocate $450 million toward a $3.5 billion mega-project. The CRC has spent $170 million so far on a $50 million "maximum" contract to design a replacement bridge. We've not purchased the first steel I-beam or poured any concrete footing.

A Camas teen who said he accidentally started a fire at his parent's house has been exonerated, at least for the time being. Brian Murray, 19, was arrested Wednesday, for first-degree reckless burning -- a class C felony. He had been on supervised release since Thursday. "We may file charges at a later date," Clark County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Patrick Robinson said Monday. "We needed more time to review all reports related to the case."
Star Wars Stormtroopers, balloon animals, music and a stilt walker are just a few of the many things that will be happening on Saturday, at the Camas Public Library, from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. The event is to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the newly remodeled and expanded library. "We've put together a wide array of events, not unlike opening day 10 years ago," said Debbie Chevron. "It's a veritable three-ring circus, complete with party hats."
Beautiful weather and thousands of competitors brought out the best in the Papermakers at the Jesuit Relays Friday, in Beaverton, Ore. The Camas girls track and field team made a big push in the final events to beat 29 other schools for the championship plaque. The Papermakers racked up 73.5 points to beat host Jesuit by 2.84 points. Camas seniors Amber Corbett and McKenna Jackson finished in first and second place in the javelin. Corbett launched a personal best throw of 129 feet, 10 inches. Jackson also had an all-time best throw of 123-11. "I've been waiting this entire season to get a PR. The competition and the environment brought it out of me," Corbett said. "Going into this meet, I felt like an underdog, and that really motivated me. It was fun having McKenna right there with me. Her and I feed off each other."
Camas student places at SkillsUSA competition Seth Albert of Camas was the runner-up at the state SkillsUSA competition.
