Antiques, collectibles can be found at upcoming show in Ridgefield

Local residents wondering the worth of their aging treasures can take them to the Clark County Antique Show to have them appraised. The annual event will be held Jan. 22 and 23, at the Clark County Event Center. For $5 per object, expert evaluators will provide an estimated value.

School notes for Jan. 4, 2011

School board seeking applicants The Washougal School Board is seeking applicants to fill two vacancies that will be left when longtime members Orlan Gessford and Tom Huffman retire Jan. 31. Qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens, registered voters and reside in the appropriate director district. The open positions will be in districts one and four. Employees and immediate family members of district employees are not allowed to serve on the board.

If allegations are true, Guard should resign If found true, Mayor Guard should resign over the abuse of his perceived station and agency power by using emergency lights whilst driving a publicly owned vehicle outside the city limits of Washougal. The state auditor should review Guard's income and expenses involving the use of the retired police cruiser, including fuel and maintenance.

Number of homeless students climbs

They sleep in cars. In parks. In shelters. On the sofas of generous relatives or friends. They are the more than 1.3 million homeless children nationwide. Of that total, more than 21,000 live in Washington state, according to numbers submitted to the federal government last week. Collected by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the numbers show that during 2009-10, the state reported 21,826 homeless students, up 5 percent from the previous year and up 56.5 percent from 2005-06.

LCCU assembles holiday dinner baskets for local families

Lacamas Community Credit Union volunteers created festive gift baskets to give to members in need as part of its third annual holiday dinner basket program. The program allows members to nominate fellow members -- or themselves -- to receive a festive holiday basket with food items for a traditional holiday dinner. LCCU President/CEO Kathleen Romane started the dinner basket program in 2008 in response to worsening economic conditions.
