The weekend was full of festivities as graduates from local high schools received their hard-earned diplomas. Students of varying backgrounds and accomplishments celebrated as family, friends and teachers looked on. The following is a collection of stories from the various commencement ceremonies.
An upcoming septic inspection workshop aims to help homeowners save money. The workshop will be held Tuesday, June 24, from 6 to 9 p.m., at East County Fire and Rescue, 600 N.E. 267th Ave., in Camas. Registration is $15 per person.
The mission: Design, build and program a robot "dragster" to race down a narrow lane and accurately stop when it "sees" the finish line. That is the challenge which students at Camas High, Hayes Freedom High and Liberty Middle schools accepted.

The assistant manager of the Columbia Credit Union branch in Washougal has been promoted. Darcie Williams succeeds Ed Hakanovic, as the assistant vice president/manager of the Washougal branch, at 271 "C" St., in The Crossing.
The Fort Vancouver National Trust is seeking 300 volunteers to lend a hand at Independence Day at Fort Vancouver on Friday, July 4. Last year more than 250 volunteers helped at the event, which was attended by more than 35,000 people.

It is a great honor to receive this recognition, named for such an inspirational person. I recall Florence's kind words of encouragement and support, as well as her smile. It is also special for me to be nominated for this award by Mayor Scott Higgins and City Administrator Pete Capell, with supportive letters from Bill Barron, Roger Knapp, Brent Erickson and Bill Dygert, all of whom have done much to support and promote parks, open space and trails.
