Total compensation is key in minimum wage debate

One of the problems with the minimum wage debate is the name itself. If we want to ensure that we don't hurt lower-income workers, we should consider total compensation, not just wages. Case in point: Bill H. earns $15 an hour as a parking lot attendant. Lisa W. earns $12.25 an hour at a fast food restaurant. But Lisa's employer provides merit raises, paid vacations, health insurance, management training, education scholarships, childcare assistance and a 401k retirement plan.

Panther boys track and field three-peats as league champs

The Washougal boys put the finishing touches on a third straight track and field league championship May 6, at Fishback Stadium. Junior Holbert grabbed first place in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and Josh Bischoff clinched first place in the discus and shot put to help the Panthers defeat Mark Morris 80-65. Thomas Normandeau notched first for Washougal in the 3,200, Matt Rotundo took first in the triple jump and Adam Thomas earned first on the pole vault.

The Patio, Plant and Garden Fair will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The popular event returns to downtown Camas, after being held at Camas High School for the past three years.

Plant and Garden Fair returns to downtown Camas on Saturday

The 17th annual Camas Patio, Plant and Garden Fair returns to downtown Camas on Saturday. The plant fair, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., typically draws in thousands of people to explore the selection of plants, trees, garden art and supplies, and more. There will also be kids' activities, live music and food.

Volunteers needed to help out at Dozer Days

Volunteers are currently being sought to participate in Dozer Days, which gives kids an opportunity to operate heavy construction equipment and participate in excavation activities. Dozer Days will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Ridgefield. Previously, the event was held at Fisher Quarry near Camas.

Treasure House aims to raise money for van

A local non-profit is working to raise money so that it can purchase a delivery van. The Inter-Faith Treasure House, which serves east Clark County, is currently working to raise at least $5,000 during the next three months to purchase the vehicle. Camas-Washougal Community Chest has offered to match any donations received in May, June and July, up to $5,000.

Establishing balance in their classroom

Fourth-grade students in Alice Yang's class at Cape Horn-Skye Elementary are learning balance, specifically, with stability balls. "I researched ways to help students who had difficulties sitting still and learned about the advantages of using stability balls in the classroom," Yang said. "So a few months ago, I posted a project on DonorsChoose.org for a class set of stability balls to replace chairs."

Daniels earns master's degree Katie Ann Daniels, a 2009 Washougal High School graduate, received her master's degree in teaching from Concordia University April 26. She also earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in graduate studies.
