2013 leaves behind many memories

With this edition of the Camas-Washougal Post-Record being published on New Year's Eve, it just seems natural to remember all of the events, people, decisions and other news that made the pages of this community newspaper during the past 52 weeks. For certain, there was no shortage of local news in 2013. Camas and Washougal city governments produced some of the most notable stories, ranging from the defeat of Proposition 1 in Washougal to the hiring of a new city administrator in Camas. In addition, Lacamas Lake Lodge and Conference Center construction began, Washougal City Council approved a utility rate reduction, Camas dealt with vandalism of its cemetery, and the consolidation of the Camas and Washougal fire departments finally became official.

CHS Hall of Fame: Gary Ostenson

During its heyday in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Far West Classic, which was held between Christmas and New Year's Day, was considered the premier holiday college basketball tournament in the country. The FWC started in 1956 as a four-team event in Corvallis, expanded to eight teams in 1959, and moved to Portland's Memorial Coliseum in 1960. Over the years the guest list included national powerhouses -- North Carolina, Indiana, Michigan, Princeton -- and more obscure programs, such as the Dartmouth Big Green and the Billikens of St. Louis.

Boy Scouts to pick up Christmas trees Saturday

Boy Scouts of America of the Columbia Gorge and Fort Vancouver Districts will pick up coats and Christmas trees. Scouts will visit neighborhoods in Camas, Washougal, Battle Ground and Vancouver Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. Residents who would like to recycle their Christmas trees should remove the stand, lights and ornaments and place the trees at the curb by 8 a.m.

Identity Clark County announces new board members

Identity Clark County, a regional business organization, has appointed Scott Milam to serve a two-year term as chairman of the board of directors. Milam is the chief operating officer of On The Go Platforms, a venture-funded startup specializing in mobile programming. He has served in executive capacities with Northwest Natural, the Vancouver Symphony and the Salvation Army, and is involved in the Special Olympics.

Credit union donation helps 20 local families

Lacamas Community Credit Union donated 20 holiday dinner baskets to its members as part of its Community Partnership program. Now in its sixth consecutive year, the credit union's program allows members to nominate fellow members -- or themselves -- to receive a holiday basket with groceries and a gift card for a special holiday dinner.

The meeting, which will also include members of the technology management chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, at 5:30 p.m., in the offices of Fringe Digital Marketing, 1101 Broadway St., Ste. 215, Vancouver.
