Temple Financial collects ‘Giving Tree’ donations

During this holiday season, Temple Financial is once again having its annual Giving Tree on display to help local families in need. The tree, located inside the Temple Financial office at 532 N.E. Third Ave., Ste. 200, in Camas, features ornamental tags with the ages of children and their likes, sizes and Christmas wishes. Presents will be wrapped and hand-delivered just before Christmas to the families that have been adopted.

Letters to the Editor for Dec. 10, 2013

Family Resource Center criticism is frustrating I am appalled to learn that Washougal City Councilors Dave Shoemaker and Connie Jo Freeman would want to remove $7,500 from the Washougal Family Resource Center based on the center not referring young pregnant women to the Pregnancy Clinic of Camas- Washougal (religious based clinic) but rather to Sea Mar Community Health Centers (comprehensive health center).

Washougal budget supports social services

The 2014 budget for the city of Washougal includes $7,500 for the East County Family Resource Center. City Councilman Dave Shoemaker spoke against the "cash subsidy" during the council meeting last night, saying social services should be funded by the county or private sector donations. "We need to focus our funds on our essential services and infrastructure," he said.

The gift of words

Gifts are a big part of the holiday season. But the Camas-Washougal Rotary Club likes to kick it off a bit earlier with its Gift of Words project. The dictionaries are given to third-grade students, and the effort is part of a national undertaking by the service club to promote literacy in local communities. Locally, the dictionaries are presented by representatives from Rotary along with Camas School Superintendent Mike Nerland and Washougal School Superintendent Dawn Tarzian.

'Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jr.' continues The Journey Theater Arts Group production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jr.," will continue through Sunday at The Washburn Performing Arts Center at Washougal High School, 1201 39th St. The musical is based on the classic movie, with a full score of new songs and dance numbers.

Purpose is to improve police procedures

Citizens who come into contact with Clark County Sheriff's Office deputies can now take a survey to rate their encounters with law enforcement. As part of the National Police Research Platform's Police Community Interaction survey, which is being administered by the University of Illinois at Chicago, feedback could help improve police procedures and approaches in Clark County, Washington State and nationwide.

Munroe presented with the Roy D. Hoover Award

A Clark County employee was recently recognized for his achievements in affordable housing and national community and economic development programs. Pete Munroe, program manager for Clark County's Housing and Community Development program, was presented with the Roy D. Hoover Award by the National Association for County Community and Economic Development.
