Preschool camps allow the youngest spring breakers to use their imaginations with creative play, stories, crafts and music.  There are several different opportunities for children in Camas and Washougal to enjoy their time off from school, safely and supervised.

Spring break options abound

Spring break is just around the corner, and with it, the age-old question: What to do? While it sounds wonderful to just take off for a week in some sunny locale, or squeeze in some late-season skiing, it's not the reality for many families with tight budgets. In addition, many parents have to work during break. But never fear, this doesn't mean your child has to be parked in front of the television or computer all day. There are several local activities and camps available for kids at no cost or reasonable rates, as well as movies at the Camas library.

Jemtegaard book fair is next week Jemtegaard Middle School librarians are currently preparing for the school's upcoming book fair. The event will be held Tuesday, March 29 and Wednesday, March 30, from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Thursday, March 31, from 7:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., for a family night event.

Superintendent candidates narrowed to four

The Washougal School District Board of Directors has selected four finalists to interview for the position of superintendent. The finalist will succeed Teresa Baldwin, who retires in June. A total of 21 people applied for the job. "We were very pleased with the number of qualified candidates applying for the position," said Blaine Peterson, board president. "We had a difficult time narrowing the field down to four candidates. We even scheduled in an extra evening to review and determine the best four that we could select. We are looking forward to meeting and interviewing these exceptional people." The finalists will visit the Washougal School District on Friday to meet district staff, students and community members and tour schools. On Saturday, the finalists will have formal interviews with the Board of Directors. Community members are invited to an open house to meet the candidates on Friday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Washougal High School Commons, 1201 39th St.

Yinger pitches no-hitter, Barr hits for the cycle in same game

Opening day 2011 will go down in history for the Camas High School baseball team. On Saturday afternoon in Camas, Kurt Yinger tossed a no-hitter and Austin Barr hit for the cycle to lead the Papermakers to an 18-0 victory over Molalla, Ore.

Port hosts emergency drill today

The area around Building 14 in the Port of Camas-Washougal Industrial Park will be a bit more active than usual today during a mock emergency drill. The port is planning to participate in simulated disaster and response efforts today, from 7 a.m. to noon, at 3801 S. Truman St., Washougal. Responding agencies will include the Camas and Washougal police and fire departments, as well as East County Fire and Rescue.

Olga M.J. Campbell Olga Marie Jean Campbell died March 8, 2011, at her home in Vancouver surrounded by her loving family. She was 71.

Marlene Macrae-Smith, co-owner of the Old Fashion Maid Restaurant, chats with customers in the dining area. She and her husband John (not pictured) have owned the Camas eatery for a total of 27 years. They plan to close the restaurant this month, retire and move back to Everett, to live near family members.

Old Fashion Maid to close this month

Local residents who enjoy eating cheeseburgers, Tater Tots and milk shakes at the Old Fashion Maid are disappointed to hear that the 60-year-old business is about to close. Marlene Macrae-Smith said the restaurant's last days of operation are expected to occur during the week of March 20-27. A more definitive closing date will be posted in the eatery's window. She and her husband John plan to retire and move back to live near their family in Everett.

Liberty Theatre grand opening events begin on Thursday

After being closed since September 2009, the Liberty Theatre will officially re-open this week. The three-day event begins on Thursday, with a St. Patrick's Day showing of "Darby O'Gill and the Little People," at 6 p.m., and continues on Friday, when the "Grease Sing-A-Long," movie will hit the big screen at 5:30 and 8 p.m.

New leaders step up to serve on Identity Clark County board of directors

Identity Clark County recently named several people to leadership positions in the organization. Among the new board members for the organization that focuses on the economic vitality of the region are chairman Scott Horenstein, vice-chairman Lisa Lowe, Secretary Mark Feichtinger and Treasurer Keith Wallace.
